Good teams win close games and the Panthers withstood a ferocious comeback by the Wildcats of Lake Highlands,
winning Tuesday’s offense-dominated game in Richardson. Mark Roberson picked up his 6th win for East,
allowing the Panthers to keep pace with Allen, 2nd in D9. Jeff Emens pitched effectively through the first
5 innings but tired a bit, handing the ball to Roberson in the 6th with a 4-run lead. But the Wildcats fought
back and tied it at 8 before 7th inning heroics by pinch-hitter Tyler Wylie. Wylie’s 2-run double broke the
tie and the Panthers endured a nerve-wrenching 7th – the final out coming on a deep fly ball to right with the
bases jammed.
The Panthers jumped to an early lead, scoring three in the first, 2 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th, but the
defense made a few uncharacteristic miscues. Eight different Panthers had hits, with doubles by Justin Snider,
Logan Reneau, Derek Bell, Connor Zmolik, and Tyler Wylie. Snider and Bell also chipped in with singles. Key
base-knocks by Zmolik and Reneau helped East gain the early advantage. Casual baseball fans enjoy the tight
game….the last inning walk-off….the thrill of the competition. On Tuesday night, the East fans breathed a
sigh of relief as they headed to friendlier ground up north.
Friday brings the Wolves to the Panthers’ side of the tracks. Go East!
