Things got a little clearer for Plano West last week, and in the process, somewhat murkier for Plano East.

The Wolves defeated the Panthers 6-4 Friday at East, a win that put West (9-0) three games ahead of its closest pursuers in District 9-5A. One of them is PESH, which fell to 6-3 with the loss.

A few days earlier, East beat Lake Highlands 10-8.

As of Tuesday, the Panthers were tied with Allen for second and a game ahead of fourth-place Richardson Berkner (5-4). Also in the mix is fifth-place Wylie, which seems to have found its groove, improving to 4-5 with a pair of victories last week.

The Panthers faced 1-8 Richardson on Tuesday, the results of which were unavailable at press time. They’ll host Berkner on Friday, starting at 7 p.m.

“We’ve just got to win games,” head coach Travis Collins said after Friday’s defeat. “You’ve got to win to get in (the playoffs).”

On Friday, the Panthers matched the Wolves run for run during the first two innings, resulting in a 3-3 tie. However, West scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-3 lead.

East got its fourth and final run in the sixth, when catcher Nick Bell led off with a double to left field. Alex Harris pinch ran for him and then scored on Justin Snider’s double to left centerfield.

However, that was all the Panthers could muster.

“We just didn’t swing the bats well,” Collins said. “We didn’t hit enough balls hard and didn’t pitch well.”

East finished with six hits, compared to eight for West.
Snider also had a single, as did T.J. Bowe, Adam Humes and Bell. Each also had an RBI.

Derek Bell (2-2) took the loss, pitching five innings, getting two strike outs in the process. Ryan Pointer pitched the final two innings, striking out one batter while giving up no hits and no runs.

Mark Roberson (6-1) got the win against Lake Highlands, a game that saw the visiting Panthers score three runs in the first, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and then two in the seventh to earn the victory.

Snider, Derek Bell, Tyler Wylie, Conner Zmolik and Logan Reneau each had a double in the game, with Wylie and Zmolik getting two RBIs apiece.
