PESH uses pitching, defense, timely hits to upend Pirates 2-0

Plano East used a time-honored method Friday evening to defeat Wylie; pitching, defense and timely hitting.
It was enough to give them a 2-0 win, and it improved their 9-5A record to 3-2.
One night earlier, they got good pitching and defense but not enough
offense in a 2-1 loss at Richardson Berkner.
East lost 4-0 Saturday at home to McKinney in a non-district contest.
“We scratched a couple of runs out,” head coach Travis Collins said
Friday. “Kind of like (against Berkner). We (hit) the ball hard but
right at some people. Hopefully, with the law of averages, we’ll start
finding some holes here soon.”
Collins said, “We’re OK. We can play better. Our pitching has been
really good, except for that one game against Plano West (19-11 loss).
We’re right where we need to be. Hopefully we’ll start finding some
holes (when hitting) here real soon.”
Mark Roberson tossed a complete-game, two-hitter Friday. He’s part of a
solid PESH staff that includes Jeff Emens and Derek Bell.
Bell won the March 17 contest against Richardson, while Jason Barrentine took the loss in Saturday’s contest.
“He did a really nice job,” Collins said of Roberson. “Jeff Emens did a
really nice job (against Berkner), but we had a couple of balls that we
couldn’t make a play on and couldn’t hit to the right spots.”
Conner Zmolik had a double Friday, while T. J. Bowe had one
against McKinney. Overall, the Panthers had nine hits over the two
games. Their offense also was stagnant against Richardson until PESH
exploded for six runs in the sixth inning.
“We knew coming in that our pitching staff would be pretty good. They
haven’t disappointed us. We got into a little funk right about the
middle of the season, and we’re battling hard, playing hard every
night, hitting the ball hard. We're just having a little tough luck
right now,” Collins said.
Junior varsity report
The Panthers belted out just six hits Friday but also scored that same
number in a 6-1 triumph at Wylie. Earlier in the week, on March 17,
they pounded out nine hits in an 11-0 win over Richardson.
Regan Calvert had two RBIs Friday, while Justin Odle, Reid Landers,
Jordan De La Cruz and Brandon Lewis each had one.
Trevor Pavelac had a triple and a double against Richardson, while Matt
Ferris hit a triple and Brandon Howle doubled.
Odle, Howle, Tucker Morehouse and Josh Moore each had a single.
Moore, Howle and Christian Kawahaii were each credited with two RBIs.
